Easy Prosciutto and Fig Salad Board

I always serve Prosciutto and fig salad board with a semi-sweet white wine, and crusty bread.

This dish combines the sweet and savory flavors of figs and prosciutto, two ingredients with a long history in Italian cuisine.

Figs were a common and valued fruit in ancient Rome, where they were used for food and medicine and symbolized fertility and prosperity.

Prosciutto is a type of dry-cured ham that is made by salting and air-drying the hind leg of a pig for 9 to 18 months, resulting in a tender and flavorful meat that is often served thinly sliced as an appetizer or on a charcuterie board.

This dish is versatile and can be enjoyed as an appetizer, a light lunch, or a main course with grilled chicken or seafood.

Why Prosciutto and fig salad board works:

  • First, prosciutto and fig salad boards work because they use seasonal ingredients that complement each other well. Prosciutto and figs are a classic pairing, as they balance the saltiness and sweetness of each other.

  • Next, because they are easy and quick to make, and require minimal cooking. You only need to whisk together the dressing, and then assemble the board with the pre-washed lettuce, sliced prosciutto, halved figs, crumbled cheese, and chopped nuts. You can also make the dressing and the board ahead of time, and store them in the fridge until ready to serve.

  • Lastly, they are versatile and adaptable, and can be customized to your taste and preference. You can use any kind of lettuce, cheese, and nuts you like, or swap them for other ingredients, such as spinach, blue cheese, and pecans. You can also add some other toppings, such as brie, honey, or fresh herbs, to make the board more interesting and flavorful.

Prosciutto and fig salad board Tips and tricks:

  • To make prosciutto and fig salad boards, you need to use fresh and ripe figs, which are juicy, sweet, and tender. You can find figs during the late summer and early fall.

  • Use thin and delicate slices of prosciutto. You can also use other types of cured meats, such as salami, ham, or bacon.

  •  You can drizzle the dressing over the board before serving, or serve it on the side, in a small bowl or a gravy boat.
