The Perfect Toasted Tomato Sandwich Recipe

The Perfect Toasted Tomato Sandwich

The Perfect Toasted Tomato Sandwich is simple, fresh, and way better than it sounds. Juicy, ripe tomatoes are layered between slices of toasted bread with butter and mayo for the perfect balance of richness and acidity. It’s all about the ingredients—good bread and peak-season tomatoes make all the difference. The texture is crisp, soft, and slightly messy in the best way. It’s a classic summer sandwich that proves simple food can still surprise you. Make it once with great tomatoes, and you’ll get it.

Ingredients

  • 4 slices Crusty country bread
  • 1 Fat garlic clove halved crosswise for rubbing on toast
  • 1 Tbsp EVOO for drizzling
  • 1/2 tsp Flaky sea salt pinch
  • 2 Tbsp Mayonnaise as needed
  • 1 Tbsp Butter as needed
  • 1 Ripe but firm tomato sliced
  • 1 Ripe but soft tomato 1/2 half for rubbing on toast
  • 1 Thinly sliced white onion
  • 4 slices Cooked bacon optional

Equipment

  • 1 Toaster

Method

  1. Put the bread slices in a toaster and toast them until golden and crisp.
  2. Cut a garlic clove in half and rub one side of each toast with the cut surface of the garlic. The garlic should leave some of its flavor and texture on the toast.
  3. Cut a ripe tomato in half and rub one side of each toast with the cut surface of the tomato. Press gently so that some of the tomato pulp and juice stick to the toast.
  4. Sprinkle some salt over the bread after drizzling oil on it. Apply mayonnaise on one slice of the bread and butter on the other.
  5. To make the sandwiches, put the sliced tomatoes on two slices of bread that have been rubbed with tomato. Sprinkle some sea salt over the tomatoes and add some onion slices. If you like, you can also add two pieces of bacon to each sandwich. Then cover them with the remaining two slices of bread. Enjoy your sandwiches over the sink to avoid making a mess. lol
